Munnar Division (1431.060 Ha)
This division comprises of the subunit of Silent valley, Kadalar, Mankulam and Kootakuzhi coming under Devikulam, Anakulam, Mankulam Thodupuzha forest range and Mankulam kulamavu coming under the Nagarampara forest range.
KFDC has a Sandal wood factory situated in Marayoor. It is the only Sandalwood distillation unit functioning in Kerala. The sandalwood products for the commercial purposes are obtained from this unit in Marayoor.
The floriculture centre in Munnar functions with the technical support of the Tropical Botanical Garden and the Western Ghats Development Program. The Floriculture centre has an eco-shop with 100 varieties of orchids, 300 varieties of ornamental plants and also a wide collection of medicinal, fruit and indigenous species etc. The sale of orchids, flowering plants and seeds are also arranged in the floriculture centre.
Flora and Fauna
Munnar division consists of tropical evergreen forests and Shola forests having indigenous species like Mesua ferrea, Canarium strictum, Toona ciliate, cullinea exarillata, Rhododendron etc. Asiatic elephant, Leopard, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri thar, Indian Bison, etc. makes up the faunal composition of this area. The hills of Munnar are famous for the species, Strobilanthus kunthiana locally known as Neelakurinji. The mass blooming of this species happens once in 16 years and is a global tourist attraction.
Community
The subunit of Kadalar have community-based activities. The Coffee and cardamom plantations functions for the welfare of our communities residing in the area. The community members include Srilankan repatriates and local tribes. The members of the communities’ work as tourist guides in the ecotourism sites of Munnar.
